What Happens to Your EV When the Power Goes Out

It’s one of those questions nobody thinks about until the power actually goes out. Suddenly you’re standing in the dark and your first thought is your phone battery. Your second thought is your car.

So what actually happens to your EV when the grid goes down? The answer is more interesting than most people expect.

The Good News First: Your Car Is Fine

Whatever charge is in your battery when the lights go out stays there. A power outage doesn’t drain your EV. The car isn’t constantly drawing electricity from the grid while it sits in your driveway. It’s a battery. Batteries hold their charge.

So if you have 200 miles of range when the power cuts out you still have 200 miles of range. You can drive to a grocery store, find a charging station that’s still running, go to a family member’s place or just handle whatever you need to handle. Your gas car neighbors technically have the same freedom but they’re also dealing with gas stations that need electricity to run their pumps. You just drive.

What You Can’t Do: Charge at Home

In most homes you cannot charge an EV during a power outage unless you have a dedicated backup power system capable of supplying a 120 or 240 volt circuit.  Your home charger runs on electricity. No electricity, no charging. Pretty straightforward.

If the power goes out while your EV is already charging most charging stations will simply resume charging automatically as soon as the power comes back on.  No lost progress, no settings to reset. It just picks up where it left off.

The practical move here is just keeping your battery above 50 percent as a general habit. If you’re plugging in every night like most EV owners do this happens automatically. A surprise outage rarely catches you with a near-dead battery when home charging is part of your routine.

Here’s the Part That’s Actually Wild

Some EVs can power your house during an outage. Not just a phone charger or a single outlet. Your actual house.

A typical home battery like a Tesla Powerwall stores about 13.5 kilowatt hours of energy. Many EV batteries hold 60, 75 or even 100 plus kilowatt hours — enough to run an average home for two to four days depending on usage. 

That’s your car. Sitting in your driveway. Being more useful than every gas powered generator on your street.

The technology that makes this possible is called bidirectional charging. Instead of power only flowing from the grid into your car it can flow in both directions. Grid to car and car to home.

In Texas several EV owners used their trucks to keep homes running during recent hurricane related outages. In California families used bidirectional systems to keep refrigerators and medical devices operating through planned blackouts.  This isn’t theoretical. People are doing it right now.

Which EVs Can Actually Do This

Not every EV has bidirectional capability yet but the list is getting longer.

The Ford F-150 Lightning was the gold standard for home backup power. Ford says an F-150 Lightning with the extended range battery can power a house for about three days at normal usage and up to 10 days with energy rationing.  At peak output the Lightning produces 9.6 kilowatts of power through 11 outlets spread across the frunk, cabin and truck bed.  The catch is that Ford discontinued the F-150 Lightning in December 2025  so new ones are no longer available. But there are plenty of used ones out there and this capability still works perfectly on every one ever made.

The Tesla Cybertruck can power a home through a Powershare Gateway setup. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 have vehicle-to-load capability that can run individual appliances. GM says most of its upcoming EVs including the Blazer and Silverado will feature full bidirectional charging. 

The US now has more than 600,000 EVs that can feed power back to homes during an emergency  and that number is only going up.

What You Actually Need to Set It Up

Having the right EV is just step one. To actually power your home you need a few more pieces:

A bidirectional charger installed at your home. This is different from a standard Level 2 charger and has to be compatible with your specific vehicle.

A transfer switch that safely disconnects your home from the grid before your EV starts feeding power in. This is not optional. It’s a safety requirement that protects utility workers who may be working on what they think is a dead line.

A licensed electrician to do the installation. Not a DIY project.

Total costs can vary significantly with some setups reaching up to $18,000 depending on your home and vehicle  though more modest setups cost considerably less. Compare that to a gas generator that needs fuel storage and regular maintenance and it starts making real sense if you live somewhere that sees regular outages.

What If Your EV Can’t Power the House

Most EVs have at least a standard 120 volt outlet that can run basic devices. Laptops, phone chargers, a fan, LED lights. Not your whole house but enough to stay functional and comfortable.

And remember your car is still a car. You can drive to a fast charging station, top up in 20 minutes and drive home. You can find somewhere with power. The EV doesn’t trap you. It gives you options that a gas car sitting in a powerless garage simply doesn’t have.

The Bigger Picture

Power outages are becoming more frequent across the US. Storms, aging infrastructure and increasing demand on the grid are all contributing to longer and more disruptive blackouts.

The gas car in your driveway is completely useless as a power source when that happens. The EV in your driveway is increasingly becoming part of the solution. Whether that’s keeping your whole home running for days or just making sure your food stays cold and your phone stays charged the gap between what an EV can do and what a gas car can do during an emergency is only going to widen.

So Here’s Where We Land

Power goes out. Your EV keeps its charge. You can still drive. You just can’t charge at home until the grid comes back. And if you have the right setup your car might be the reason your block is jealous of your house.

Not bad for something people spent years calling a glorified golf cart.
