Electric Vehicle Myths that are Completely False!

Electric vehicles have a reputation problem. Not because they’re bad cars but because there’s a mountain of misinformation floating around about them. Some of it comes from people who drove an early EV ten years ago and never updated their opinion. Some of it is just stuff that got repeated so many times it started to sound like fact.

Either way it’s time to set the record straight.

Myth 1: EVs Don’t Have Enough Range for Real Life

This is the one that gets repeated the most and it’s also the one that’s aged the worst. Early EVs did have limited range. We’re talking 80 to 100 miles on a good day back in 2012. That was a fair criticism at the time.

But we’re not in 2012 anymore.

Most new EVs today offer between 250 and 350 miles on a full charge. The average American drives fewer than 40 miles a day. You could go nearly a week without charging and never once come close to running out. The range anxiety conversation made sense a decade ago. In 2026 it’s mostly just a habit people haven’t broken yet.

Myth 2: Charging Takes Forever

This one really depends on what kind of charging you’re talking about and most people who say this are imagining the worst case scenario.

Yes plugging into a regular household outlet is slow. But that’s like complaining a garden hose takes too long to fill a swimming pool. Nobody charges their EV that way for daily use.

With a Level 2 home charger most EVs charge fully overnight in 6 to 10 hours. You plug in before bed and wake up to a full charge every single morning. Think about that for a second. When did you last wake up to a full tank of gas without doing anything?

For road trips DC fast chargers can add 100 to 200 miles of range in 20 to 30 minutes. That’s about as long as it takes to use the bathroom grab a coffee and stretch your legs anyway. Most people don’t even notice.

Myth 3: EVs Are Too Expensive

This one used to be true. It really isn’t anymore.

The used EV market has completely flipped the script. You can buy a used Chevy Bolt with over 200 miles of range for $15,000 to $20,000 right now. A used Nissan Leaf can be found for $12,000 to $16,000 depending on the year and mileage. A used Hyundai Kona Electric starts around $22,500 and many sit in the mid $20,000s. A used Kia Niro EV or Volkswagen ID.4 can be found in the low to mid $20,000s. And a used Tesla Model 3 comes in between $22,000 and $28,000.

We’re not talking about obscure hard to find cars either. These are models that sold in huge numbers and are now flooding the used market as leases end and owners upgrade. There are more options at more price points than most people realize.

When you factor in what you save on gas and maintenance over five years a lot of EV owners come out thousands of dollars ahead compared to someone who bought a gas car at the same purchase price. The expensive reputation is running about five years behind reality at this point.

Myth 4: EV Batteries Die After a Few Years

People treat EV batteries like smartphone batteries. “It’ll be useless in three years.” That comparison doesn’t hold up at all.

EV batteries are engineered completely differently. Most manufacturers warrant them for 8 years or 100,000 miles. Real world data shows most EV batteries still hold 80 to 90 percent of their original capacity after 100,000 miles. That’s not a battery that’s giving up. That’s a battery doing exactly what it was built to do.

There are Tesla Model S cars on the road right now with over 300,000 miles that still have most of their original battery capacity. These are not fragile pieces of technology. They’re built to last.

Myth 5: EVs Are Actually Worse for the Environment

This argument comes up a lot and it deserves a real answer instead of just being dismissed.

Yes manufacturing an EV battery does produce more emissions upfront than building a gas car engine. That part is true and it’s worth acknowledging. But here’s what that argument always leaves out. Over the full lifetime of the vehicle an EV produces roughly half the carbon emissions of a comparable gas car even when you account for how the electricity is generated. Multiple independent studies have landed in the same place on this.

And as the electrical grid gets cleaner over time that gap keeps growing. The manufacturing argument is real. It’s just not the whole story.

Myth 6: There Are No Charging Stations Anywhere

This might have been a fair point in 2015. It is genuinely not true today.

The US now has over 85,000 public charging stations across the country with DC fast chargers alone topping 73,000 ports. That’s a 31 percent increase in fast chargers in less than a year. They’re at shopping centers, hotels, parking garages, highway rest stops and grocery stores. Tesla’s Supercharger network which recently opened up to most major EV brands covers virtually every major highway corridor in the country and is widely considered the most reliable charging network in the world.

Is it as convenient as pulling into any random gas station? Not quite yet. Is it so scarce that it’s a real practical problem for most drivers? Not even close.

Myth 7: EVs Are Boring to Drive

This might actually be the funniest one on the list.

Electric motors deliver instant torque the moment you touch the accelerator. No waiting for the engine to rev up. No gear shifts. No lag. Just immediate power. A base model Tesla Model 3 hits sixty miles per hour in about 5.8 seconds. The performance version does it in under 3. A Hyundai Ioniq 6 will leave most sports cars looking embarrassed at a traffic light.

Anyone who calls an EV boring has probably never actually driven one.

The Bottom Line

Most of the reasons people give for not considering an EV are based on information that’s outdated or just never was true to begin with. The technology has moved fast. The prices have come down. The infrastructure has grown up.

You don’t have to love EVs. But it’s worth making sure the reasons you’re skeptical are based on what’s actually true in 2026 and not what was true back when smartphones still had headphone jacks.
